ELMER KOUWENBERG
CHANCE AS A STARTING POINT
A small sheet of glass is covered with fabric and broken with a hammer. The fragments are then repeatedly moved, creating temporary compositions.
Each arrangement is photographed before the pieces shift again. There is no predetermined image: the process generates
possibilities, most of which will never continue.

FINDING THE IMAGE
After a glass composition has been photographed, the image is transformed in Photoshop through sequences of tools
and precisely chosen numerical settings. This creates a larger digital field - a platform of possibilities.
Within that same field, a small area of approximately 20 x 20 cm is selected. The selected area is not a separate image: it is discovered
inside the platform.
FROM SELECTION TO A NEW IMAGE

The selected fragment is enlarged in stages and developed through repeated digital operations. Colour, line and pattern evolve until the fragment has become a new composition of approximately
100 x 100 cm at 300 dpi. White accents with varying opacity introduce luminosity and visual depth.
This process example has not yet been produced as a physical artwork.
